People-Power
Breaks Into Four Basic Questions
(Answering
the questions is a valuable exercise)
How
Much Value Do Others Offer to You?
How
much value do others offer to you? First
you have to separate real value from false perceptions.
If you are unrealistically trying to fill the expectations of your
internal needs, the value will be negative.
The real value that others offer to you depends on your ability to
recognize and relate to their rules and realities. Without your ability to recognize and access other’s
values, their values are basically worthless or negative to you.
How
Much Influence Do Others Have Over You?
How
much influence do others have over you?
Are you able to resist a salesperson on the phone, in a store, or
on a car lot? Are you or
others in control of your money, thoughts, efforts, and time?
Do you take away from your family and friends while you let others
use you? Who is in control of
your life—you or others? Do
you support a child’s foolish behavior while you criticize other parents
for doing the same? Are you
being victimized by someone who is being a continual victim?
Are you ready for better control?
How
Much Value Do You Offer to Others?
How
much value do you offer to others? Is
your value to others being someone that they can use or
victimize—someone that they will dislike because you are weak?
Or is your value due to the strength and character that you
represent as an individual—value that you can build with Viewpoint
skills? Your preference
should be obvious, but we too often find ourselves on the being used list. Viewpoint skills can make a difference.
How
much influence do you have over others?
How
much influence do you have over others?
How good are your communicating, teaching, sales, and intimidation
skills? You may want to
reject the idea of using these skills, but they do have their appropriate
places for application. By
learning the above skills, you stay better prepared and you are stronger
in resisting influencing efforts from others.
Your resistance will improve other’s behavior towards you.
Too often ignored is the leadership influence that you can generate
by leading your life as an example of personal strength and character. This type of life-style leadership can be quite difficult to
ignore by others—even those who would criticize.
Building
people power is part of the Viewpoint skill package.
