Different
Worlds
Children
live in anticipation of adult freedoms, and they have difficulty
understanding why their parents don’t want them to have any fun—fun
that the children are convinced won’t hurt them.
Peer pressure is for adventure and discovery—not responsible
behavior.
Adults
living in their worlds of responsibilities and consequences don’t do
very well at conveying realities to their children.
They have a hard time understanding why their children won’t
simply take their word for what is right and wrong.
And, young adults are still trying to realize their childhood
dreams of freedom.
Expectations
For Children
You
should expect the opportunity to grow your mind so that you can be
prepared for adult life. You
should also expect to phase into the adult world of responsibility as you
reach the legal age of majority. As
you expect to gain the freedoms of being an adult, you should expect to
demonstrate your ability to handle those freedoms and responsibilities
without running to your parents as if you were still a child.
Being in college can change some of the rules, but the basis
transformation should still occur with you accepting your grownup role.
While
you may accept the value of completing your formal education, that
completion does not in any way mean that the learning process should end.
Most of today’s jobs require continuing education for you to stay
useful in them. But what
about gaining practical education about yourself, people, relationships,
and the mysteries of life? We
recommend that you be aware of the advantage of this type of education and
that you actively seek the knowledge whether you take our course material
or not.
Expectations
For Parents
Make
a better effort to communicate with your children instead of just making
decisions and issuing directives from your operating level.
But, the most important item is to establish a process where your
children actively prepare to step into the adult world without you holding
their hands every step of the way through their transitions.
Let them know early, that taking shortcuts to just having a good
time leads downward—not upward. Show
them the value of taking each day of their lives as an opportunity to
continue building their personal power for having increasing advantage in
their lives. Help them to
understand that the continuing learning and mastering of life’s
variables is an enjoyable and rewarding opportunity.
