Let’s
consider that normal reactions are good emotions regardless of whether
they are positive or negative. Let’s
further consider that dominance of negative emotions is bad.
We will consider hate to be an extreme case of anger and not
consider it separately.
GOOD
VERSUS BAD EMOTIONS
Some
consider negative emotions, such as anger of any kind, as a weakness or as
an evil. We do not consider
short-term anger as anything but normal.
When anger cannot be controlled or released, then a problem exists. Constant anger that is held just below the surface on ready
alert will take its toll until it is removed.
The same holds true for greed, bitterness, jealousy, resentment,
and envy. Many people hold on
to negative emotions as justification for wrongful deeds.
Living off of anger and revenge is a hiding place.
It is hiding inside of a shell for protection.
Hiding in fear is similar.
We
consider the range of emotions as simply a means of responding to
conditions. The key indicator
is where the balance of emotions lies.
Dominant negative emotions or fake dominant positive emotions spell
trouble. In either case, we
are most likely watching a person hiding from dealing with the realities
of life.
A
simple test between good and bad emotions is whether your emotional
responses are working for or against you.
Don’t confuse happy and sad with proper responses.
YOUR
AVERAGE EMOTIONAL STATE
Your
typical or average emotional condition is a good indicator of your life
quality. To evaluate your
status, you should leave out normal grieving and similar cases.
You need to look at your long-term emotional levels for insight.
Life’s experiences have a tendency to push us into negative
territory.
OPPORTUNITIES
Being
on the negative side is an incentive to put the effort into moving back
into positive territory. Also,
being on the negative side makes it easier to evaluate the things in your
life that are holding you back. Anytime
that you can correctly identify your problems is good because that
provides focus for your solutions.
Practicing
the Viewpoint skills brings better control over life’s activities and
that will push your emotional balance upward.
Make a list of the negative emotions that are predominate in your
life. Then examine the
possibility of offsetting each emotion with increased mind-power for
dealing with your concerns.
